A fresh controversy has erupted over the finances of the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) after human rights lawyer, Prof Chidi Odinkalu, accused the Senate Committee on South-East Development Commission of conducting a hostile and prejudicial oversight hearing.

Meanwhile, civil rights group, the Civil Rights Realisation and Advancement Network (CRRAN) has demanded a full investigation into the agency's spending, including an alleged N153million expenditure on its Abuja liaison office.

The controversy followed a tense appearance by officials of the commission on Tuesday, before the Senate Committee chaired by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, where lawmakers questioned the utilisation of funds allocated to the newly established regional development agency.

During the hearing, members of the committee raised concerns over expenditures by the commission, including what was described as N153 million spent on a one-room office apartment in Abuja and questions surrounding billions of naira allocated to the agency despite the apparent absence of visible projects across the South-East region.
