By Malay Mail Wednesday, 10 Jun 2026 6:24 PM MYT KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 — The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has launched Op Soga XI nationwide to intensify enforcement against illegal gambling activities, particularly sports betting and online gambling expected to rise in conjunction with the Fifa World Cup 2026.In a statement issued by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) today, Bukit Aman said the integrated operation will be carried out across all state contingents ahead of the tournament, which runs from June 11 to July 19, 2026.CID director CP Datuk M. Kumar said Op Soga XI will be implemented aggressively and comprehensively to curb illegal gambling syndicates nationwide.“Op Soga XI is implemented in an aggressive and comprehensive manner involving all state contingents, focusing on monitoring and enforcement actions,” he said in the statement.The operation targets both online and physical gambling activities, including syndicate-run betting platforms, websites and social media accounts promoting illegal wagering.It also covers physical gambling activities such as illegal betting premises, bookmakers, agents, and individuals involved in organising or promoting gambling activities.According to the statement, the operation will strengthen strategic cooperation with enforcement and regulatory agencies, including the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and other relevant bodies.This cooperation will focus on identifying and blocking gambling platforms, websites and financial transactions used by illegal betting syndicates.“The operation also strengthens strategic synergy with enforcement agencies such as MCMC and Bank Negara Malaysia to identify and block platforms, websites and transactions used by gambling syndicates,” he said.Police warned members of the public not to be involved in any form of illegal gambling, whether as participants, agents, collectors or organisers.“The public is advised not to be involved in any form of illegal gambling or betting, whether as players, agents or organisers, as strict action will be taken under existing laws,” he said.PDRM said enforcement will be taken under multiple legal provisions, including the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, the Betting Act 1953, the Penal Code, and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA).The statement added that PDRM remains committed to full enforcement and will not compromise with any parties involved in illegal gambling activities.Members of the public are also urged to channel information on illegal gambling activities to the nearest police station to assist enforcement efforts.
