The Transport Department on Wednesday stated that vehicle owners who do not reserve a special number within two months of obtaining a temporary registration (TR) will be automatically allotted a regular number. In a statement, the department said that under the existing VAHAN system, a temporary registration issued for a newly purchased vehicle remains valid for 30 days. Under the revised procedure, vehicle owners will have a two-month period from the date of TR issuance to reserve a special registration number, failing which a regular registration number will be assigned automatically. The department advised those who had expressed interest in obtaining a fancy number at the time of purchase but are yet to complete the reservation process to do so at the earliest. Officials said the VAHAN system would randomly generate and allot a regular number once the two-month period expires without any reservation being made. Published - June 10, 2026 08:26 pm IST
