Rising living costs are changing how Indian professionals approach careers, with employees prioritising job stability, flexible work and financial security over higher salaries.
Rising living costs are fundamentally altering how Indian professionals approach work, shifting their focus toward job stability, income diversification, and geographic affordability.According to Indeed’s latest Cost of Living Survey, which polled 1,207 employees and 1,013 employers, there is a stark disconnect between salary growth and financial reality. Nearly seven in ten employees say their current income cannot comfortably support their lifestyle, with 41 per cent feeling significantly more financially stressed than they did two years ago.Employers slow to respond despite growing financial concernsWhile 73% of employers acknowledge that rising costs impact their staff, leading to increased demands for higher compensation and flexible work, a staggering 77% have failed to introduce new supportive measures. This institutional inertia is driving employees to take matters into their own hands.Side incomes and smaller cities emerge as new career considerationsNearly six in ten workers are either actively supplementing their primary income through side gigs or considering doing so. Furthermore, escalating housing costs and brutal daily commutes are devaluing metro living. Consequently, 54% of metro-based employees say they would relocate to Tier-2 or Tier-3 cities if comparable career opportunities were available, prompting 43% of employers to shift their hiring strategies toward these emerging hubs.Indeed highlights the need for sustainable career choicesSashi Kumar, Managing Director of Indeed India, noted that more than three in four employers have not introduced new measures specifically aimed at helping employees manage rising living costs. He emphasised that while compensation remains important, workers are increasingly evaluating the overall quality and sustainability of their careers.Kumar highlighted that affordability pressures are influencing more than just financial decisions, as commute fatigue and rising housing costs force professionals to think more carefully about their time, energy, and where they see their future.Job security overtakes salary growth in career decisionsUltimately, the data reveals that Indian professionals are no longer just chasing the highest paycheck; they are optimising for long-term sustainability. When planning future career moves, employees rank job stability and security highest at 41%, well ahead of increased compensation at 30%. Organisations that fail to adapt to this demand for stability and flexibility risk losing talent to more agile competitors. For context, Indeed is a global hiring platform and the world’s top job site, connecting over 645 million Job Seeker Profiles with 3.3 million employers across more than 60 countries.Published on June 10, 2026
