Gotham FC will soon have a place to call home.The 2025 NWSL Champions on Wednesday announced plans to construct the club’s first-ever training facility, a major milestone that marks a significant new chapter for the New Jersey-based club. This is the first time the club will have its own facility after two decades of borrowing fields or sharing them with other teams across the state.The National Women’s Soccer League club will move into the former New York Red Bulls training facility in Whippany, N.J., and will transform the site into a 27,000-square-foot purpose-built center that prioritizes performance, recovery and community. It features three grass fields, including one that is heated. The club also intends to build a fourth full-size indoor field for year-round play, pending permit approval. The property was designed with frequent input from players.“This is absolutely huge for us,” Yael Averbuch West, president of soccer operations at Gotham, told The Athletic on Monday. “We aspire to provide an environment that really prepares our players and our staff for competing at the highest level in the world stage, and for us to have our own home out of which to do that is really important.There are obvious draws for Gotham to move into an existing soccer space; it is difficult to find this much land readily available in the Tri-State area, let alone with existing full-size fields ready to go.The team plans to repurpose and renovate the property, stamping their own Gotham identity throughout. The club estimates construction will cost $35 million and is being privately funded. The project includes a 15-year lease that begins Sept. 1, emphasizing the team’s commitment to staying in New Jersey area amid reports the they may soon relocate their home games to Etihad Park in Queens, New York, for the 2028 season.The club estimates construction of the new training facility will cost $35 million. Those areas will be called “Gotham Quad.” There will be a 3,000-square-foot-gym that overlooks the training pitches, a hydrotherapy room, a player recovery room and a private player lounge, as well as a dining area, dedicated content studio and press room. It will also feature a space for Gotham players, their families and staff.The property will house Gotham’s sporting operations and aims to become a community hub for youth soccer in the area. The club said there is an open process for naming rights and other commercial opportunities, opening the team to even more potential revenue streams.Renovations, designed in collaboration with SHoP Architects, will begin by late summer, with an estimated completion date of next year. The site is currently in use by teams for the FIFA men’s World Cup, which begins Thursday and concludes in New Jersey on July 19.Gotham has been vocal about their sky-high ambitions, with splashy signings and spoken goals of winning as many trophies as the club possibly can. The team won two of the last three NWSL championships and the 2024-25 Concacaf W Champions Cup. The team has a crowded calendar packed with international travel. That is why recovery and wellness were two of the main driving forces behind the facility’s design, which also featured heavy input from the coaching side.
