On the morning of Oct. 8, 2022, the serene Mississippi River town of Bellevue, Iowa, population about 2,500, woke up to a calamity — news of an apparent homicide, the first in nearly a decade. Dozens of investigators from six different law enforcement agencies were combing the crime scene at the Mississippi Ridge Boarding Kennels with body cameras rolling. Bellevue's small police force, with just several officers, invited the state police to lead the investigation.
