Spring Awakening is returning to New York.
A revival of the Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik’s musical will run Off-Broadway this fall at Studio Seaview. Danya Taymor, a Tony winner for her direction of The Outsiders, will direct. The production has not yet announced any casting and plans to hold open call auditions in July.
Celia Rowlson-Hall, who has worked in music videos and short films, will choreograph the revival, which will feature music supervision by Or Matias.
The musical, which features a rock score, is based on the 1891 play by Frank Wedekind, which follows a group of teenagers in 19th-century Germany who are discovering their sexuality and rebelling against the strict rules set by their parents.
The musical premiered on Broadway in 2006 and helped launch the careers of Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele and John Gallagher Jr, before embarking on a run in London’s West End. It returns to New York after a Deaf West Broadway revival in 2015, which featured a company of deaf and hearing actors. Groff, Michele and several other original cast members held a one-night reunion concert in 2021, and then performed a number at the 2022 Tony Awards to mark the 15th anniversary of the musical.
