At least 12 people have been killed, and nine others injured after armed gunmen stormed the Jumpers informal settlement in Cleveland, east of Johannesburg, in a late-night attack that has triggered a major manhunt by the South African police.

The police confirmed on Wednesday that the attackers, numbering more than 10, arrived in a white Toyota Quantum, entered the settlement through two access points, and opened fire on residents across multiple locations before fleeing the scene in the same vehicle.

Authorities described the incident as a “heartless” and “barbaric” mass shooting, while saying the motive remains unknown, according to the BBC.

According to police, eight men and three women were killed instantly at the scene, while another victim later died in the hospital.
