'Are we going to sink the boat or not?,' asked Makis Voridis
The Greek parliament caught fire on Tuesday after an MP from the ruling New Democracy party made a controversial remark about migrant boats crossing the Mediterranean.
Amid rumours of snap elections, the political atmosphere in Athens is heating up along with the hot summer weather.
“So, he (the smuggler) sets off with the illegal migrants, and they’re out in the open sea. I’m listening to suggestions. Are we going to sink the boat or not?” Makis Voridis, an influential New Democracy MP, asked during a discussion on a bill implementing the EU migration pact.
Voridis, a former migration minister, belongs to the right wing of the ruling party and is considered a hardliner on migration issues.
