Kolkata, June 10: The BJP government in West Bengal announced allocation of portfolios among members of the newly-inducted ministers on Wednesday with senior party leaders Swapan Dasgupta and Tapas Roy getting the Finance Department, and Department of Industry, Commerce and Enterprises, respectively.According to a State government notification, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari will keep the Department of Home and Hill Affairs, Department of Land and Land Reforms and Refugee Relief and Rehabilitation, Department of Power, and Department of Information and Cultural Affairs.While Swapan Dasgupta is a veteran columnist, author and former Rajya Sabha MP, Tapas Roy is among the seniormost MLAs elected to the 18th West Bengal Legislative Assembly. Roy, who had served as a minister in the erstwhile Trinamool Congress government, joined the BJP in 2024.Allocated PortfoliosDudh Kumar Mondal, an MLA from West Bengal’s Birbhum district, has been allocated the charge of the Agriculture department. Sharadwat Mukherjee, a medical practitioner, will hold the portfolio of the Department of Health and Family Welfare.Dipak Burman, earlier the headmaster of a school, has been given charge of the Department of School Education, Department of Housing and Department of MSME and Textiles. Journalist turned politician Jagannath Chattopadhyay will hold charge of the Department of Higher Education and Technical Education.Notably, the Chief Minister expanded the Council of Ministers on June 1 by inducting 35 newly-elected legislators, three weeks after the BJP formed its first-ever government in the State.First BJP GovtThirteen cabinet ministers, including Swapan Dasgupta, Tapas Roy and Saradwat Mukherjee, were sworn in at Kolkata’s Lok Bhawan. Three ministers of State with independent charge and 19 ministers of State also took oath, giving complete shape to Suvendu Adhikari’s team.After the induction of the 35 MLAs into the Council of Ministers, the State cabinet strength now stands at 41.Adhikari was sworn-in as the Chief Minister of West Bengal on May 9, after the BJP recorded a landslide victory in the Assembly elections in April. That day, Adhikari, the BJP legislature party leader, inducted five ministers, including Dilip Ghosh and Agnimitra Paul, in the State cabinet.
