A massive police manhunt is underway after 12 people were gunned down and at least nine others wounded in a deadly shooting spree at the Jumpers Informal Settlement in Cleveland, east of Johannesburg.

The attack happened shortly after 11pm on Tuesday and has prompted the Acting National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, to deploy additional specialised resources to support the investigation and track down those responsible.

In a statement on Wednesday, Dimpane said national forensic experts, Tactical Response Teams and specialised investigators had been mobilised to strengthen ongoing efforts by Gauteng police.

“We have reinforced provincial efforts with additional national specialised resources to ensure that the investigation is expedited and that those responsible are swiftly brought to justice,” said Lieutenant General Dimpane.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said officers responded to reports of an active shooting at approximately 23:10.
