Vilnius will hold its first River Festival on July 25, stretching along the banks of the Neris from Vingis Park bridge to Žirmūnai bridge, the city council has announced.

The event coincides with the feast day of St Christopher, the patron saint of Vilnius, and will offer a full day of music, sport, outdoor cinema, creative workshops, author meet-and-greets, book club gatherings, family activities and community events spread across several sections of the riverbank.

Active pursuits will feature prominently, including sports sessions, night-time kayaking on the Neris and a silent disco. The evening will close with a concert near the White Bridge.

The headline attraction is billed as the first event of its kind in the Baltic states: Red Bull Tandemynės, a team cycling competition staged on the water, in which participants are judged not only on speed but on ingenuity – with the promise of improvised contraptions, comedy and dramatic plunges into the river.

Vilnius mayor Valdas Benkunskas said the festival was an opportunity to reconnect the city with one of its defining natural features. "
