The US Defence Department has added a range of Chinese firms, including prominent companies involved in e-commerce, AI and electric vehicles, to a list of designated military companies, in a move that could indicate coming sanctions.

In a Federal Register notice scheduled for publication on on Wednesday, the department designated companies including Alibaba and carmaker BYD as “Chinese military companies” under Section 1260H of the National Defence Authorisation Act.

Other companies added to the list include search giant Baidu, WuXi AppTec, RoboSense and Unitree Robotics.
