The United States has introduced a new “premium” visa processing option that allows foreign applicants to pay an additional $750 to secure faster interview appointments, adding a fresh layer of cost to an already tightening visa system that has significant implications for African travelers.
According to the Associated Press, the U.S. State Department will this week announce a pilot program enabling certain visa applicants to pay an additional $750 for expedited interview scheduling, guaranteeing an appointment within 10 days at participating U.S. embassies and consulates.
For applicants who opt into the program, the additional $750 fee would raise the cost of applying for a U.S. tourist or business visa from $185 to $935, potentially putting faster access out of reach for many travelers.
While the expedited service could help reduce appointment backlogs and speed up access to interviews for those willing and able to pay, it adds another financial hurdle for travelers and risks creating a two-tier visa system in which wealthier applicants receive preferential treatment.
The programme is scheduled to run from July 1 to December 31 as a pilot initiative, with officials indicating it could be extended depending on demand. The embassies offering the expedited service will also be announced before the July 1 rollout.
