Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant has stepped in after retired Bombay High Court judge Justice Gautam Patel reported receiving threats linked to a judgment he delivered in a long-running dispute over the leadership of the Dawoodi Bohra community, reported TOI.The CJI, currently on an official visit to the United Kingdom, took up the matter with Indian High Commissioner to the UK P Kumaran after Justice Patel revealed that a threatening letter had been delivered to his daughter's home in London.Following their meeting, the high commissioner assured the CJI that security measures had been put in place for Justice Patel and his family. According to the CJI, British authorities have been alerted and arrangements made to ensure their safety.Threats tied to 2024 rulingThe threats are reportedly linked to a 2024 judgment delivered by Justice Patel in a case concerning the succession and identity of the Syedna, the spiritual head of the Dawoodi Bohra community. The matter remains under appeal.According to the report, Justice Patel has said his family has received multiple anonymous letters over the past several months. One communication sent earlier this year alleged that he had delivered the ruling under pressure and demanded that he publicly retract his decision through a video statement. The latest threat, however, was directed at his daughter in London. Justice Patel suggested the move appeared designed to exploit the fact that the alleged intimidation occurred outside India, even though the dispute itself originated in Maharashtra.Officials familiar with the matter told TOI, the Indian High Commission informed the CJI that the threats appear to be connected to individuals in India because of their link to litigation arising from Maharashtra. The CJI said he has also reached out to the acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, Justice Ravindra Vithalrao Ghuge, asking that appropriate judicial and administrative steps be considered in light of the developments.Justice Patel retired from the Bombay High Court earlier this year after serving as one of its most prominent judges. The incident has raised concerns within legal circles about attempts to pressure members of the judiciary through threats extending beyond India's borders.
