20th Century Studios has released the first trailer for Whalefall, an upcoming survival thriller from writer-director Brian Duffield that turns an unlikely nightmare scenario into a feature-length adventure.Based on Daniel Kraus’ bestselling novel, the film follows Jay Gardiner, played by Austin Abrams, a young diver searching for traces of his late father in the waters off California. His journey takes a shocking turn when he is swallowed alive by an enormous sperm whale, leaving him trapped inside the creature with limited oxygen and little hope of escape. The trailer opens with Jay’s troubled relationship with his father, portrayed by Josh Brolin, before plunging viewers into the ocean depths where the film’s central ordeal begins. What follows is a tense survival story set almost entirely inside the whale, as Jay fights panic, dwindling resources, and the immense biological forces surrounding him.Duffield, best known for No One Will Save You, has described the film as both a thriller and an emotional father-son drama. While the premise evokes memories of Jaws, Moby-Dick, and the whale sequence from Pinocchio, the filmmaker has emphasised that Whalefall is grounded in scientific research and treats the whale as a living animal rather than a movie monster. The production relied heavily on practical effects and extensive underwater filming. According to the filmmakers, Abrams performed many of his own stunts, including demanding scuba-diving sequences shot in large water tanks. The trailer also highlights the whale’s haunting clicks and calls, drawing on the fact that sperm whales are among the loudest animals on Earth.Alongside Abrams and Brolin, the film stars Josh Brolin, with the story positioning the whale encounter as both a physical and emotional journey.Whalefall arrives in theatres on October 16 and will also receive a 4DX release Published - June 10, 2026 12:14 pm IST
