The Southern Regional Health Authority (SRHA) has welcomed a donation of critical medical equipment valued at approximately US$20,000 to enhance paediatric care at Black River Hospital in St Elizabeth. The donation, facilitated through the Rotary Club of St Andrew North, Rotary International and United Way Worldwide, includes an infant warmer, an infant incubator, two infusion pumps and a phototherapy lamp.Regional Director of the SRHA, Michael Bent, said the partnership comes at a crucial time as the hospital continues rebuilding after the passage of the Category 5 hurricane.“Having gone through a Category 5 hurricane in the direct path of the hurricane, this partnership was something that we welcomed,” Bent said. “This partnership not only helps to improve the service, but it also helps to build back that level of hope for the caregivers down in the facility.”The facility was severely damaged during the passage of Hurricane Melissa in October 2025. Bent said the equipment will directly support newborns and children receiving care at the facility, while also strengthening the capacity of healthcare workers in the paediatric unit.He noted that despite extensive damage caused by the hurricane, the Black River Hospital team continued to provide essential services, including surgeries and maternity care. The SRHA said the donation will benefit the more than 150,000 residents who depend on the hospital, marking another step in its recovery and restoration process. The equipment was officially handed over on Friday, June 5, at the JN Corporate Offices in St Andrew.
