TEMPE, Ariz. — Quarterback Jacoby Brissett and linebacker Josh Sweat attended the Arizona Cardinals mandatory minicamp Tuesday, but neither player practiced. The projected starter, Brissett has been a top storyline of the Cardinals’ offseason, even though he has not been around. The veteran QB skipped voluntary organized team activities as he tries to get management to restructure his contract.Sweat, the subject of offseason trade speculation, recently posted on Instagram that he does his own training in the offseason and that his OTA absence was “nothing new.” The 29-year-old pass rusher last season posted a career-best 12 sacks.“It was good to see both those guys,” first-year head coach Mike LaFleur said. “We’ll just take it one day at a time, and we’ll re-evaluate.”Neither player was made available to news reporters. In his post-practice session with reporters, LaFleur said Sweat — who signed a four-year deal worth $76.4 million with Arizona in the spring of 2025 — was held out of practice because it was his first day back. He did not seem concerned about the pass rusher’s readiness.“There’s no situation (with Sweat),’’ LaFleur said. “I’m not going to put a guy out on the field that hasn’t been out there to prep. … Josh has always done this. Josh has always had his own program, and he’s not the first guy on any team I’ve been a part of that (has done) that. And that’s OK. The one thing you know about Josh, when he’s not in this building, he’s working.”LaFleur declined to go into detail regarding Brissett’s absence, a topic he has mostly dodged all off-season. The 33-year-old Brissett last season replaced injured quarterback Kyler Murray, playing Arizona’s final 12 games. Although Brissett put up decent numbers, the Cardinals went 1-11, closing out one of the worst seasons in the organization’s history.Brissett is slated to make $4.88 million this season with the potential to make more in roster bonuses, but only $1.5 million is guaranteed. In his absence, veteran journeyman Gardner Minshew has run the first-team offense. Minshew signed a one-year deal in March that came with $5.14 million guaranteed. The Cardinals also are evaluating rookie Carson Beck, a third-round pick in April’s NFL Draft.LaFleur said Brissett attended team meetings Tuesday. During practice, the quarterback went through the team stretch perioud but stood off to the side, holding a football while teammates ran individual and team drills. He often talked with offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.“Guys are excited that he was here,’’ star tight end Trey McBride said. “Guys want him to be here. Obviously, we’d love to have him in the building. But he’s working through some things on his own. We totally understand that, but you could just tell the presence that he brought today, being in the building, was awesome.”
