The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has added bemotrizinol to the list of permitted sunscreen active ingredients, the agency announced on Tuesday, June 9.It's the first new active ingredient allowed to be added to the over-the-counter products since the late 1990s, according to a news release.“Bemotrizinol has been used safely in Europe for decades, and FDA’s action will increase competition and consumer confidence in sunscreen products," Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said in a written statement. What is Bemotrizinol? The ingredient protects against both ultraviolet A and B rays and has low levels of absorption through the skin into the body. The agency considers the ingredient to be safe for use in sunscreens by adults and children six months and older. This is a developing story that will be updated.Michelle Del Rey is a trending news reporter at USA TODAY.
