Widow’s Bay has just two episodes to go, and the Apple TV horror comedy is building toward something very stormy as it nears its finale. Its considerable fan base is going to have a hard time saying good-bye to this delightfully weird island full of unique characters and terrifying creatures. So far, the streamer hasn’t commented on whether or not a second season is coming, but it’s something creator Katie Dippold has long hoped for, and star Matthew Rhys, who plays Mayor Tom Loftis, is right there with her. In a new interview on the Television Academy website, Dippold said her goal is that “the audience just wants to lean in more and more.” It’s a feeling she herself felt while coming up with the setting for her show. “I always wanted this place to feel like a real world that I could take a ferry to and get lost in and explore all the little terrifying nooks and crannies,” she said. “I would be dead after a week, but that’s the dream.”
For Rhys, playing the show’s goofy yet poignant main character is made even more rewarding because of the rich world Widow’s Bay surrounds him with. “When I first read the [pilot] script, it was almost a disservice to call it a horror-comedy,” Rhys said. “What Katie and the writers and the entire crew have done is they’ve built a place with a history and characters you cannot get anywhere else on television. There is a deep bench of stories to be told about this town, about these people.”
