In the district road safety meeting in Mangaluru on Tuesday, the Mangaluru City Traffic Police urged the district administration to get septic tanks constructed at regular intervals, helping fish transporting vehicles to discharge waste water instead of spilling it on roads.

In order to end the menace to motorists from spilled wastewater on the roads by fish transporting vehicles, the Mangaluru City Traffic police have asked Dakshina Kannada district administration to construct septic tanks at regular intervals along the highways for vehicles to discharge wastewater accumulated in vehicle tanks.In the district road safety meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner H.V. Darshan on Tuesday, the city traffic police officials said the fish transporters and fish mill owners have expressed the need of septic tanks for the discharge of wastewater along the National Highways leading to Kerala, Bengaluru and Udupi. Kerala Government has constructed septic tanks along the National Highways in Kerala.The traffic officials said the fish dealers have suggested construction of septic tanks near toll gates in Talapady and Hejamady, and near Farangipete. The fish carrying lorries will drain the wastewater collected in the two tanks attached to the lorries to the septic tanks. District administration should take immediate action for construction of septic tanks, the officials urged.NHAI measuresNHAI project director Abdulla Javed Azmi said road safety measures, including installation of traffic signals, having zebra crossing and median railings, have been taken between Haleyangadi and Talapady of National Highway 66 for safety of motorists and pedestrians. Median openings, where accidents occurred, have been closed, he said.The road safety committee members said steps should be taken to vacate street vendors operating near Kallapu, Jeppinamogaru, Thokkottu junctions.Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) Commissioner Ravi Chandra Naik said MCC has continued its action to remove street vendors operating on the footpaths of Hampankatta, State Bank, Central Market area. Only street vendors with identity cards given by MCC will be permitted to operate in these areas, he said.The city traffic police said they have held meetings with private city bus operators about operating buses from the newly constructed bus stand near Mangaladevi temple. The officials said city buses will shortly start operating from the new bus stand.SuspendedPolice said driving licences of 384 drivers of vehicles, involved in the 433 grievous traffic accidents between 2025 and April 30, 2026, have been placed under suspension in the district. In the period, police and RTO officials have collected fine from 1,855 drunken driving, 201 shrill horn, 184 overload vehicles, 99 overloaded school vehicles and 12 ‘tint’ glass cases, the officials stated.
