Nearly 3 000 members impacted by alleged data leak.

In a shocking breach of privacy, the confidential medical records of almost 3 000 local police officers have been leaked among staff, raising serious concerns about the security of sensitive data within the South African Police Service (SAPS).

With an independent investigation currently taking place, the matter has prompted a widespread call for accountability and heightened scrutiny over the measures in place to protect personal information.

The confidential medical records of the Western Cape officers are believed to contain diagnoses including alcoholism, bipolar disorder, post traumatic stress, major depression, surgeries, cancer and various other ailments and sickness.

Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRCU) said the alleged breach relates to an internal Human Resource communication regarding absenteeism management and leave administration.
