Durban community activists and volunteers are in discussions with Malawian authorities to urgently transport approximately 500 displaced Malawians back home.
Malawian nationals fled the Clare Estate informal settlements and temporarily settled on the playground at Sherwood Hall on Sunday, with the numbers expected to swell to approximately 1,000 by Wednesday.
On Tuesday, with dark clouds looming overhead and the possibility of rainfall, Durban volunteers were desperately trying to put up tents for the displaced community as an interim measure.
Approximately 500 Malawian residents were displaced from informal settlements in Clare Estate and Sydenham. They have sought refuge at Sherwood Park in Durban while waiting to be taken home by bus.
