Argentina was experiencing a profound transformation when Scotsman William Cathcart founded the Buenos Aires Herald in 1876.

That year, Congress passed a law encouraging European immigration, which would reshape the country’s demographics forever. Argentina also completed its first wheat export — cementing its export profile that would define its entry onto the global stage.

These milestones were part of an extraordinary modernization process the country experienced between 1870 and 1880. Over the course of the decade, the railway network more than tripled in size, beginning to link Argentina’s vast territory, and Buenos Aires started to take shape as a globally cosmopolitan capital.

The Herald was born in that Argentina.
