A Leeds widow who moved to rural Italy three years ago to enjoy the sun says that last year’s “awfully British” autumn and winter forced her to put an end to her rental and return to the UK.

Stephanie Jones, 71, relocated to the Italian countryside near the city of Terni, north of Rome, in 2023, after her husband passed away. She rented a two-bedroom cottage with a small garden and pool for €750 (£650) a month.

After years of working as a garden designer, she was hoping to spend her twilight years enjoying a sun-filled retirement.

“This year has been terrible, it’s been raining practically every day for two months, and when it doesn’t rain there is wind and it’s cloudy,” Ms Jones told The i Paper. “The rising humidity is killing my aching bones. It’s no longer a joy living here.”
