WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. — The Los Angeles Rams are on the practice fields again in preparation for the 2026 season, and there’s a buzz in the air.All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie is here, following a blockbuster trade from the Kansas City Chiefs. And two-time Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett is here, too, after a blockbuster trade from the Cleveland Browns.Hope is in the air. And a sense of early pressure, too.The Rams finished the third and final open practice of their organized team activities Monday at the team facility. A few themes are emerging. Here’s what stood out:Myles Garrett’s possibilities seem endlessThe Rams’ latest splash move is already out on the field and building intrigue as to what he could do here.Garrett has been with the Rams for one week now following the blockbuster trade that brought him here, which cost the Rams a Pro Bowl edge rusher in Jared Verse as well as a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick and a 2029 third-round pick. He traditionally skips the voluntary portions of the offseason, but he found it was important on a new team to suit up for at least a couple of different practice settings so far.Garrett participated in individual drills Monday. He sat out team drills — he’s still brand new to the Rams’ scheme — and coach Sean McVay has long taken a precautionary approach this time of year.Garrett worked with the outside linebackers rather than the defensive line. It’s the same spot Verse played, but it’s a shift from what he has done in his nine-year career. The times he has rushed while standing up have almost exclusively come when lined up over the center on a random blitz.“We’re still going to have our principles with that stuff, but we’re going to let him do what he does best, and we all know exactly what he does best,” defensive coordinator Chris Shula said. “You’re not going to take Michael Jordan, LeBron (James), all those guys and pull them out of their comfort zone. We’re going to work with him and put him in the best spots that we think for him and the defense to succeed.”It’s similar to how the Rams have discussed McDuffie. The role he’ll fill most often is at outside cornerback, where the Rams had a major need after the unit fell apart in the playoffs last season. Still, to maximize McDuffie’s value and keep offenses from game-planning against him, Los Angeles plans to move him around between the outside and nickel spots.McDuffie has played both spots, whereas Garrett has not. There’s no doubt about what Garrett can handle athletically or physically, and the Rams know they need to get creative at times to find playing time and the right matchups for complementary pass rushers such as Kobie Turner, Braden Fiske and Josaiah Stewart.Trent McDuffie is already creating hopeEven in light practice settings, McDuffie is making an impression.A highlight came in 11-on-11 team drills, when Stetson Bennett was filling in at quarterback for Matthew Stafford. McDuffie had been going to battle with Puka Nacua in one-on-one assignments. This time, Bennett attempted to hit the Rams’ go-to receiver on an out pattern. The two-time All-Pro cornerback jumped the route almost before Nacua could turn his head. McDuffie undercut the pass and corralled the interception before the ball could touch the grass, creating cheers from his defensive teammates.
