If you need a lift, just watch—or perhaps rewatch, on a loop—the viral clip of horse-racing trainer Cherie DeVaux losing her mind as her 23-to-1 Kentucky Derby long shot, Golden Tempo, charged from the back of the pack down the backstretch to clinch a stunning comeback victory. It’s almost guaranteed to make you smile, if not tear up. “Come on, Jose! Come on, Jose! Come on, Jose!” DeVaux implores Golden Tempo’s jockey, Jose Ortiz, who obviously can’t hear her from the Churchill Downs stands, as the horse makes his move. She jumps up and down as she realizes Golden Tempo is picking up momentum. The people around her remain stoic. Then bedlam builds. DeVaux’s “Come on, Jose”s become “Oh my God!”s as Golden Tempo inches into the lead and crosses the finish line in first. DeVaux, the first female trainer to win a Kentucky Derby, is engulfed in embraces, including from her stepdaughter, who is crying hysterically. “I’m glad I can be a representative of all women, everywhere,” DeVaux said after the race. “We can do anything we set our minds to.” Golden Tempo won again at the Belmont Stakes in June.
