India on Tuesday strongly criticised Pakistan over reports of deadly violence in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), accusing Islamabad of attempting to conceal its failures through a campaign of misinformation and calling on the international community to hold it accountable for alleged human rights abuses.MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addresses a press briefing, in New Delhi on Friday. (ANI)The remarks came after reports emerged that more than 20 people were killed and several others injured in clashes between protesters and security forces in different parts of PoK.Addressing a weekly media briefing, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Pakistan was resorting to "fake news and videos" to divert attention from the situation in the region."We continue to see in this context a pattern of fake news and videos emanating from Pakistan. It is a desperate attempt by Pakistan to cover up its own failings and deflect attention away from its human rights abuses," Jaiswal said.Expressing concern over reports of a crackdown on demonstrators, he added: "There are reports of severe police brutality in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in which several protestors have been killed and many injured. We hope the international community will hold Pakistan accountable for its misdeeds and abuses."The MEA's comments come amid widespread protests across PoK, where residents have been demonstrating against a range of issues, including economic hardship, governance concerns and the allocation of reserved legislative seats.According to reports, soaring inflation, rising electricity bills and shortages of essential commodities have fuelled public anger in the region. Local media reports have also suggested that Pakistani authorities deployed paramilitary forces to contain the unrest, resulting in violent confrontations.
