Idris Elba has weighed in on the future of James Bond, saying the long-running spy franchise should avoid attempts to become “woke” as producers search for the next actor to play 007.Speaking in a recent interview, Elba reflected on years of rumours that positioned him as a potential successor to Daniel Craig. While he reiterated that he was never seriously in contention for the role, the actor said he appreciated being considered for one of cinema’s most recognisable characters.Elba argued that Bond has endured for decades because it embraces fantasy and escapism, suggesting the franchise should remain faithful to the qualities that made it successful. He also acknowledged that some international audiences may struggle to accept a Black actor portraying the British spy, citing the character’s global popularity and the varying cultural expectations attached to the role. The comments come as speculation surrounding the next Bond continues to intensify. It has been five years since the release of No Time to Die, which marked Craig’s final appearance as the MI6 agent. Earlier this year, Amazon officially confirmed that the search for a new Bond had begun, with casting discussions reportedly underway. The next instalment in the franchise is already taking shape behind the camera. Dune director Denis Villeneuve has been tapped to direct the film, while Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight is writing the screenplay.Several actors have been linked to the role in recent months, including Henry Cavill, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Callum Turner, though no official shortlist has been announced.Elba is currently appearing in Masters of the Universe, where he plays Man-At-Arms. The actor joked that the fantasy character’s appearance bears little resemblance to his own, noting that audiences readily accept dramatic reinterpretations in fictional worlds.
