Waves crash onto the Island Bay shore.
Wellington's coastal residents have been cleared to return home, but are being warned to keep an eye on the next high tide after waves of up to 11 metres battered the capital's coastline on Tuesday.
The high waves were accompanied by gusts of nearly 100 kilometres an hour today, while over on the East Coast, gusts of 137 kilometres an hour were recorded at Cape Turnagain.
The Heavy Swell Warning for Wairarapa will remain in place until 12pm Wednesday.
Waterfront properties across the Wellington south coast were told to evacuate before 9am this morning.
