Musa Mbhele has broken his silence on allegations that he abused his position to facilitate a sex-for-jobs scheme and unlawfully withheld payments to municipal contractors. Speaking at a session hosted by the Xubera Institute for Research and Development in Hillcrest last week, Mbhele dismissed the claims as a smear campaign and defended both his reputation and his conduct as city manager.

eThekwini City Manager Musa Mbhele has broken his silence on allegations that he recruits women for sexual relationships in exchange for employment opportunities within the municipality.

Speaking at a public engagement hosted by the Xubera Institute for Research and Development in Hillcrest last week, Mbhele dismissed the allegations as false and defamatory, saying they had damaged his reputation and caused distress to his family.

He said critics had created a false image of him as someone with an uncontrollable appetite for women, despite the fact that he has never been involved in a romantic relationship with a municipal employee.

According to Mbhele, whenever an attractive woman is appointed to a position within the municipality, rumours immediately emerge linking her appointment to him.
