Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala's annual trawling ban will come into force from Tuesday midnight and remain in effect until midnight on July 31 as part of measures aimed at protecting marine resources during the fish breeding season.Ahead of the restrictions, the Fisheries Department has issued detailed guidelines for fishermen and boat operators.Officials said that, during the ban period, only traditional fishing craft will be allowed to carry out fishing activities."Trawling and double-net fishing have been completely prohibited. Authorities have directed boats from other states to leave Kerala waters immediately, while other vessels must remain anchored at their respective base-of-operation centres," an official release said.Read More: EU clears continued imports of Indian aquaculture goodsThe department said only one carrier boat will be permitted alongside each inboard fishing vessel.Fishermen going to sea have been instructed to carry life-saving equipment and keep registration documents, fishing licences and Aadhaar cards with them at all times.Twenty-four-hour control rooms have been operating at various fisheries stations since May 15 to assist fishermen and coordinate emergency responses during the ban period.Representatives of fishermen's organisations have sought financial assistance in place of free ration supplies during the ban period.They also urged the authorities to make greater use of Coast Guard services to strengthen safety measures along the coast.The annual trawling ban is enforced along Kerala's coastline each year to help conserve fish stocks and support sustainable fishing practices.
