United Nations, Jun 8 (EFE).- United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called on Israel on Monday to reopen the border crossings into the Gaza Strip and resume humanitarian movements, following the escalation of hostilities with Iran. “The Secretary General is deeply concerned by the decision to close the KM Shalom and Rafa and suspend the entry of supplies into Gaza. He calls for the immediate resumption of humanitarian movements,” said Guterres’ deputy spokesperson, Farhan Haq, during his daily press briefing. The crossings closed on Sunday were the only two points of entry into Gaza through which humanitarian aid was entering the Strip. Haq explained the Secretary General called for the «immediate resumption of humanitarian movements at scale into and throughout Gaza.” He also urged “all parties to facilitate the rapid, safe, and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance in accordance with their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law.” Iran attacked Israel on Sunday in response to its airstrikes on the suburbs of Lebanon’s capital. Asked about the secretary-general’s view that Israel is linking border crossings to other conflicts, Haq stated it is “something for the Israeli authorities themselves to explain.” “We do not believe that the crossing points into Gaza should be closed. The survival of the people of Gaza is dependent on a flow of humanitarian aid being available at all times. We want the previous system of normal humanitarian traffic, normal commercial traffic to be restored,» he added. This is not the first time the Israeli military has closed the crossings with Gaza due to hostilities in the Middle East. On Feb. 28, when the United States and Israel launched a joint operation against Iran, it prevented aid from entering the devastated enclave for weeks and blocked sick Gazans from leaving for Egypt via the Rafah crossing to receive medical care.
