Apple on Monday used its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026 to showcase its biggest artificial intelligence push yet, unveiling a completely rebuilt Siri, a new generation of Apple Intelligence, AI-powered photo editing tools, expanded child-safety features and updates across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Vision Pro.The announcements mark Apple's latest effort to catch up with rivals such as Google, Microsoft and OpenAI in the rapidly evolving AI race.Here are the biggest announcements from WWDC 2026:Siri gets its biggest upgrade in 15 yearsThe headline announcement was Siri AI, a completely redesigned version of Apple's voice assistant powered by Apple Intelligence.Unlike the current Siri, the new assistant can understand personal context, analyse what's on a user's screen, answer questions using information from the web and perform actions across apps.Also Read: Apple WWDC 2026: Siri gets an AI makeover, its biggest upgrade since 2011 debutApple demonstrated how Siri can pull restaurant recommendations from Messages, find hotel confirmation numbers buried in old emails, locate specific photos and draft emails or notes on behalf of users.The assistant is also far more conversational, allowing users to ask follow-up questions and maintain longer interactions without repeating context.Apple has also launched a dedicated Siri app that syncs conversations across devices through iCloud, allowing users to continue chats between iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Vision Pro.Siri AI will enter beta testing later this year.Apple Intelligence gets a major upgradeApple also unveiled the next generation of Apple Intelligence, built on updated Apple Foundation Models that power Siri, image generation, writing assistance and reasoning capabilities.The company said the new models run both on-device and through its Private Cloud Compute infrastructure, allowing Apple to process more complex requests while maintaining privacy protections.Apple reiterated that personal data processed through Apple Intelligence is not stored or accessible to Apple.The company has deeply integrated Apple Intelligence across its ecosystem, bringing AI-powered features to Safari, Messages, Mail, Calendar, Phone, Home and Shortcuts.Among the new capabilities are natural-language event creation, webpage monitoring, contextual call assistance, AI-generated smart home summaries and natural-language automation creation.New AI writing tools arrive across Apple devicesApple is turning Siri into a system-wide writing assistant.Users can now generate emails, messages and documents from scratch, rewrite text, change tone, proofread content and receive writing suggestions virtually anywhere they type.The company said Siri can even adapt drafts based on how users typically communicate with specific contacts, automatically adjusting tone and formatting.Visual Intelligence expands beyond iPhoneApple significantly expanded Visual Intelligence, bringing image understanding capabilities to more devices.On iPhone, Siri can now analyse what users see through the Camera app and answer questions about objects, locations and food. The assistant can also perform actions such as splitting restaurant bills using Apple Cash.For the first time, Visual Intelligence is also coming to iPad, Mac and Vision Pro, allowing users to ask questions about content displayed on their screens.Also Read: Apple WWDC 2026: Siri gets an AI makeover, its biggest upgrade since 2011 debutImage Playground gets photorealistic image generationApple upgraded Image Playground with new AI image-generation capabilities.Users can now create photorealistic images from text prompts, transform photos into different artistic styles and generate images using people stored in their photo libraries.The company also introduced several AI-powered editing tools, including:Cleanup improvements for removing unwanted objectsExtend, which expands image boundaries beyond the original frameSpatial Reframing, which allows users to adjust composition after a photo has been takenNew child safety and parental controlsApple announced a major expansion of its child-safety features.New child accounts automatically enable age-based protections, including restrictions on adult websites, inappropriate media and App Store content.The company also introduced a new "Ask to Browse" feature that requires parental approval before children can visit new websites.Communication Safety has been expanded to detect and blur images and videos containing violent or graphic content, building on existing nudity protections.Parents will also gain more tools to manage screen time, app access and device usage.Liquid Glass gets more customisationApple updated its Liquid Glass design language introduced last year.Users will now be able to control the intensity of the effect through new customisation settings.The company also redesigned app icons using additional Liquid Glass layers, making them sharper and more visually distinct.Privacy remains at the centre of Apple's AI strategyThroughout the keynote, Apple repeatedly positioned privacy as a key differentiator for its AI efforts.The company said Siri AI and Apple Intelligence have been designed around a new privacy-focused architecture that combines on-device processing with Private Cloud Compute when additional computing power is required.Apple stressed that personal user data is not stored or made accessible to the company when requests are processed through its cloud infrastructure.AvailabilityDeveloper testing for Siri AI and the new Apple Intelligence features begins immediately.A public beta will roll out later this year across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27 and visionOS 27.Siri AI will be available on iPhone 16 models and newer, iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, M1-powered Macs and iPads, Apple Vision Pro, and select newer Apple Watch models.The feature will not initially be available on iPhone and iPad in the European Union, while Apple Intelligence and Siri AI will also remain unavailable in China pending regulatory approvals.
