The Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner G.S. Sameeran and City Police Commissioner A. Amalraj conducted an inspection on Marina beach to improve lighting for safety and security of visitors.The civic body is planning to install solar-based lighting and additional CCTV cameras at the beach. Chennai Corporation Commissioner G.S. Sameeran said: “The GCC and the Police will assess the requirement of lighting and CCTV. The solar-based mild lighting will not affect nesting of olive ridley turtles. The fittings will be installed 100 metres beyond the high tide line.”The civic agency will increase light fittings and CCTV cameras to facilitate rescue operations by lifeguards.During the joint inspection on Monday evening, the officials assessed the effectiveness of the watch tower, identified CCTV black spots and checked the all-terrain vehicles.The GCC is operating one all-terrain vehicle for surveillance while the police are maintaining another all-terrain vehicle for rescue of visitors. The GCC will conduct a survey to assess safety and security issues pertaining to the Marina beach and submit a report shortly.As visitors have demanded that civic agencies remove restrictions to visiting the beach during the night, the civic body is also exploring the feasibility of permitting visitors round the clock.
