D9+ keen for a unified front on tackling social media harms but Estonia has age check concerns
Digital ministers from the D9+ group – a bloc of capitals representing smaller EU countries that see themselves as digital frontrunners – are pressing for a common approach to tackling social media child safety concerns, per a declaration signed on Monday.
In the declaration, 14 EU tech ministers – led by Luxembourg – urge the European Commission to take a “truly European approach to protect minors online” by coordinating enforcement of EU rules on child safety matters.
They also want the bloc to explore a “common approach for a digital majority across the EU”, referring to an EU-wide age-gate for accessing social media.
Last month, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the bloc could consider introducing such a law as soon as this summer.
