Fisheries Minister A. Srinath and Tourism Minister S. Rajesh Kumar on Monday distributed fishing ban period relief assistance to fishermen from the west coast in Kanniyakumari district.Addressing the gathering, Mr. Srinath said that several welfare initiatives announced in the election manifesto, including modernisation of deep sea fishing, promotion of sea weed cultivation, processing and sales of seafoods and the declaration Kanniyakumari-Rameswaram coastal area as blue economy zone, would be implemented one by one for the welfare of fishermen in the State.Emphashing that Kanniyakumari district had the highest number of people engaged in the fishing sector, he said the district had a 71.5-km coastline comprising 42 fishermen villages. For the fishermen engaged in deep sea fishing, the government had been providing several communication gadgets including satellite phone and transponder at subsidised rates.Mr. Srinath noted that several grievances of the fishermen in the district would be reviewed, asserting the Tamil Nadu government would find solutions for the fishermen’s issues.In his speech, Mr. Rajesh Kumar said the fisherman from the district had been facing several issues including sea erosion, damages to groynes and houses being damaged due to rough seas.He added that the government must construct houses for those fishermen, stressing that delay in issuing death certificates to deceased fishermen must be rectified.A total of 27,250 fishermen families from the west coast of the district will receive ₹8,000 as fishing ban period relief assistance.Kanniyakumari MP Vijay Vasanth, Collector M. Prathap, Director of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare K. Vijayakarthikeyan, Kanniyakumari District Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare, Deputy Director K.T. Gopinath, MLAs S. Austin, Thalavai Sundaram, R.
