Ružomberok’s network of steps has linked homes, churches and markets with its hilltop centre for generations.

Ružomberok residents walk on a rarity many may not even realise is unusual. In fact, few towns in Slovakia can boast anything quite like it.

The northern Slovak town is home to a network of historic staircases and stepped streets linking its main square with the rest of the town centre.

Rather unusually, Námestie Andreja Hlinku square sits atop a small hill. Whether heading to the municipal office, church or school, residents have to make the climb today — just as they did centuries ago.

The best known are the School Stairs, famous for their distinctive balustrades. But the town's other staircases are equally worth exploring. Some have appeared on television, others bear witness to Ružomberok's turbulent past or even serve as the venue for unconventional sporting events.
