Turkey’s Culture Ministry has designated the site of the Battle of the Granicus, where Alexander the Great won his first major victory against the Persian Empire in 334 BC, as a protected historical and archaeological site.
The designation follows archaeological discoveries and scientific research, according to a ministry statement.
Culture Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy described the battle as “one of the turning points that changed the course of world history.”
“This important step, which will add value to the cultural heritage of Canakkale, will make significant contributions to historical science, cultural tourism, and the strengthening of our cultural routes,” Ersoy said.
The site lies within the boundaries of Karabiga town in the Biga district of Canakkale (Dardanelles). Authorities said the goal is to make the battlefield accessible to visitors.
