Anti-drone systems developed for military use have foiled an attempt to deliver mobile phones and jailbreak equipment to a prison on the southern island of Crete, authorities said Monday.
The ministry for public order said in a statement that prison guards spotted a drone heading for the prisoners’ courtyard at the Hania jail on Saturday afternoon, and activated the anti-drone system.
“The drone was neutralised and brought down close to a sentry post, while a bag that it had released was later found on the roof of part of the prison complex,” the statement said. Guards presently caught a prisoner trying to access the roof.
The bag was found to contain five mobile phones and their chargers, two wireless routers, sim cards, a 20-meter length of mountaineering rope, metal files and other tools.
It was the fifth successful foiling this year of attempted deliveries by drones to prisons throughout Greece, using defenses developed by Defense Ministry labs.
