Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has urged George Russell to draw inspiration from Lando Norris’s remarkable championship comeback last season, insisting the British driver can still secure his maiden title despite recent setbacks.Russell endured a second consecutive race without points in Monaco, a result compounded by a drive-through penalty stemming from a pit-stop error by his Mercedes team. This leaves him 68 points adrift of teammate Kimi Antonelli, the Italian teenager who has now claimed five consecutive victories. The parallel with Norris is striking. Last season, Norris also won the opening round but then experienced a dip in form, culminating in an engine failure at Zandvoort, the 15th of 24 races, which left him 34 points behind McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri. Yet, Norris mounted an extraordinary recovery, not only overhauling Piastri but also fending off a resurgent Max Verstappen, who had been 104 points off the pace, to clinch the title in the final race.Lando Norris won the world championship at the final race in Abu Dhabi (David Davies/PA) (PA Wire)Wolff revealed he had spoken with Russell, emphasising the marathon nature of the championship. "This is a long championship. Last year I remember people saying Piastri has won the championship," Wolff stated. "It’s not necessarily only about one year, but it’s many years. Luck swings your direction, and then sometimes it doesn’t. And it’s not a question of not knowing how to drive."He added: "It’s about having a car underneath that you feel confident with and that you can go fast. Formula One is about physics and not mystics. You don’t unlearn how to drive, so I’m not stressed at all for these performances, because we know he’s one of the best."Russell himself described his recent run of misfortune as "beyond frustration" and an "incredibly difficult pill to swallow" after the Monaco Grand Prix. Compounding his woes, the 19-year-old Antonelli, who was outpaced by Russell last year, has proven quicker than his more experienced teammate in two of the last three events, in Miami and again in Monaco.Kimi Antonelli is leading the World Drivers' Championship after securing a fifth consecutive win of the season in Monaco (PA)However, Wolff was quick to contextualise Russell’s form. "George is really good at analysing and assessing the situation and I told him, and it is easy to forget, that Montreal was only two weeks ago, he was on pole, he won the sprint race, and he was leading the main grand prix and there was no discussion about a lack of speed," he explained."We have got to stay with both feet on the ground, work through the data, and see why this one was a difficult one for him, and so was Miami, but it is not a pattern I have seen throughout the season," Wolff continued, expressing unwavering confidence in his driver pairing. "I couldn’t wish for a better combination of two drivers, and I have no doubt George will come back very strong, and that makes us good as a team that we have two drivers who we can rely on for poles and wins, and to make us win the constructors’ championship."Russell will aim to rebound at this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix, with 16 races still remaining on the calendar.
