Nagpur, June 8 (PTI) Former Punjab governor Banwarilal Purohit has been elected as the president of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and Finance industry veteran Deepak Parekh as its vice president.A joint meeting of the Executive Committee and the Board of Trustees of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, held on June 7, unanimously elected Banwarilal Purohit as its president and Deepak Parekh as the vice president, according to a release issued by Jagdish Lakhani, Executive Secretary & Director General of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mumbai.The elections were held following the resignation of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan president Surendralal Mehta on health grounds.Purohit, who has served as a trustee and member of the executive committee of the Bhavan for about 22 years, and its vice president for more than a decade, is a distinguished public figure, parliamentarian and administrator who has rendered notable service to the nation in various capacities.He has served as Governor of Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Assam, and Meghalaya, and as the administrator of Chandigarh, the release said.Parekh is one of India's most respected corporate leaders and financial sector visionaries. He played a transformative role in the development of India's housing finance sector as the then chairman of HDFC Ltd and has contributed significantly to the country's economic growth and institution-building.Published on June 8, 2026
