For decades, flying has meant stepping out of reach: messages left unread, emails delayed, conversations paused mid-sentence, and contact with family, friends, and work temporarily cut off. Air travel often meant disappearing from the digital world the moment the aircraft left the ground.
That era is now being directly challenged.
Wizz Air, the largest airline by market share in Bulgaria, has announced plans to roll out Starlink-powered onboard connectivity across its entire fleet in 2027. The company says this move will position it as the first European ultra-low-cost carrier to introduce high-performance satellite internet at scale, aiming to bring continuous connectivity to millions of passengers.
The airline frames the development as a shift in what budget air travel can offer. Once considered a premium feature, stable onboard internet is being pushed into the low-cost segment. As a result, Wizz Air is presenting the rollout as a broader change in expectations for affordability and digital access in the sky.
“Ultra-low-cost travel has always been about making opportunities accessible to more people,” said Ian Mallin, Chief Commercial Officer of Wizz Air. “In 2027, we are taking this philosophy into the space age. Our passengers no longer have to choose between affordable prices and reliable onboard internet to stay connected to the people, work and moments that matter most. We are proud to be at the forefront of this change and partner with Starlink to deliver an even better onboard experience for Wizz Air passengers! Let's WIZZ!”
