The CITU has demanded that fish traders be registered as members of the Tamil Nadu Fishermen Welfare Board. In a memorandum submitted to the Assistant Director, Fisheries Department, Thanjavur, on June 8, the trade union body affiliated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) said that a section of people were engaged in the day-to-day sales of fish in and around Thiruvidaimaruthur taluk for the past three decades. The people who have taken up this profession as their livelihood were not receiving any social security scheme benefits fully, so far.Hence, CITU demanded that they be registered as the welfare board members so that they could avail the financial benefits extended by the board. It had also demanded formation of a separate fishermen cooperative society.Meanwhile, inquiries reveal that as per the board regulations, people engaged in fishing and allied activities such as beach worker, peeling worker, processing labourer, boat building yard worker, net mending worker or small scale fish distributor for his livelihood alone could be registered as members of TNFWB.
