With the Perambalur-Thuraiyur State highway being widened with paved shoulders, residents and motorists have called for widening the Thuraiyur Bypass in view of the rising volume of traffic. The bypass section, which runs for a length of about 3.4 km, has been witnessing a steady rise in traffic. The bypass was opened to traffic in June 2012 to ease congestion in Thuraiyur town. It largely caters to passenger vehicles headed towards Musiri, Karur, Namakkal, and Pallappatti from Chennai.Besides, a huge volume of heavy vehicles carrying consignments from cement factories in and around Ariyalur take the bypass while heading towards Musiri, Kulithalai, Karur, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Erode, Palakkad, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Hosur, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh.“The road attracts a continuous traffic round the clock. It is time it is widened with paved shoulders in the interest of road safety,” said N. Saravanan, a road safety activist and a resident of Thuraiyur.Mr. Saravanan pointed out that the Manachanallur bypass, which was declared open last year, is 13.5 metres wide and has been laid with paved shoulders, ensuring a smooth drive for motorists. The Thuraiyur bypass attracts a higher volume of traffic and has to be upgraded, he said. With the Perambalur-Thuraiyur State highway being widened with paved shoulders, the Thuraiyur bypass is bound to attract an even higher volume of traffic.Besides, the temporary bus stand, established to facilitate the redevelopment of Thuraiyur Bus Stand, is located near the Sorathur Four Road on this route, making it all the more necessary to widen the road. The Highways Department should build an overbridge at Musiri Cut Road round about, the starting point of Thuraiyur Bypass, keeping in mind the developments in the town, Mr. Saravanan said. The Highways Department, in response to a petition, from him, had said that a proposal for widening the road would be submitted to the government for approval and sanction of funds.
