NewsUK NewsDrowningsPalwasha Akbar, 13, was pulled from the River Wharfe near Burnsall in the Yorkshire Dales but, despite the best efforts of members of the public at the scene and medics, she died shortly after13:30, 08 Jun 2026The family of a schoolgirl who died after she went missing in a river in Yorkshire have paid tribute to the "bright, kind, and caring 13-year-old" as she was pictured for the first time.Palwasha Akbar, 13, from Bradford, died after being pulled from the River Wharfe near Burnsall, North Yorkshire after she was reported missing on Sunday, May 31.She was rescued from the water and taken to hospital by air ambulance, but despite the best efforts of members of the public at the scene and medical staff she died a short time later.Her family has paid tribute to her and set up a Go Fund Me appeal in her memory, Yorkshire Live reports.Her family said Palwasha was a "bright, kind, and caring 13-year-old girl whose tragic passing has left her family, friends, school, and community heartbroken. Palwasha loved reading, spending time with her friends, and bringing happiness to those around her."She was a hardworking student with a warm smile, a gentle nature, and a caring heart. She had a bright future ahead of her and touched the lives of so many people through her kindness and positivity."In memory of Palwasha, we are raising funds to support charitable causes that reflect the values she lived by – kindness, compassion, and helping others."Through this fundraiser, we hope to create something positive and lasting in her name, ensuring that her memory continues to make a difference in the lives of others."Palwasha was a Year 9 pupil at Bronte Girls’ Secondary Academy and Lyndsay Hall, acting principal at the school, was keen to pay tribute to her.Ms Hall said: “We are deeply saddened by the death of one of our much-loved students in a swimming accident.“She was a valued and much-loved member of the school community.
