At the first-ever battle of the bands hosted at BLR Hubba in January this year, rock/metal band I Got The Wrong Tattoo were first runners up, edging out bands from across the country. That is when they turned up on our radar, already preparing to release their debut EP Addicted to a State of Mind. Founded by vocalist and guitarist Vishnu Menon originally as a solo project, the Bengaluru-based band now comprises drummer Rohaan Nambiar, guitarist Sugam Deka and live bassist Abraham Jacob. At BLR Hubba and every show, the band presents metal and hard rock with reckless abandon, something they have bottled into their studio recordings on the five-track EP that came out at the end of March.Listen to Addicted to a State of Mind and you can hear everything from the epic-scale ambitious riffs and dual guitar solos of bands such as Avenged Sevenfold as well as old-school Pantera riffs, alongside metalcore breakdowns and everything in between.Conceptually, Vishnu says they were writing songs about addiction and chasing a high that only occurred briefly in one’s life. “It goes from the moment where he has no idea what this substance is to the final point where he realises this high he was searching for was just the normal life he once lived,” he says. The founder, who began making music at the age of 14 and originally conceived the project as an instrumental one, says he drew from personal experience when it came to writing ‘Gods Don’t Believe’, ‘Late Night Target Practice’, the title track, ‘Iconic’ and the more reflective, inward looking ballad-like ‘Urges’. He adds, “Many of these lyrics stem from personal experiences, my struggles and my attempts to overcome them.”
