Among the many layers to the New York Knicks’ dramatic playoff run is who might win the NBA Finals MVP if they were to finish off the San Antonio Spurs and capture the long-awaited championship.Point guard Jalen Brunson is the team’s best player and true leader, also delivering huge moments in the fourth quarter. However, Karl-Anthony Towns has performed the best through the first two games, including effective defense against San Antonio star Victor Wembanyama.New York leads the Finals 2-0 and is a -500 favorite with the series headed to the Big Apple for Game 3. Brunson is the consensus +115 MVP betting favorite with Towns as the second favorite at +150. Wembanyama is next with +380 odds. Before the finals started, Wemby was the favorite at -170, followed by Brunson at +200 and KAT at +2000.The Finals will be decided on the court, but this hardware will ultimately fall in the hands of the 11 media members with voting privileges. That is the main caveat with any award. One must handicap both the players and the voters, including narratives and other outside influences.A colleague once called these types of betting odds a “fake market” because, after all, we have no idea what voters are thinking right now. We don’t have early polling like an election. That is what separates these markets from conventional odds, such as a division or conference race. Adding the human element muddies the waters and often reminds everyone that oddsmakers have no more knowledge than bettors. In recent years, Jaylen Brown (2024) and Andre Iguodala (2015) won the award as players who were not considered the winning team’s best player. Towns would represent a hybrid of the two. His talent and contributions compare favorably to Brown’s, while Iguodala earned votes for defending the Cleveland Cavaliers’ LeBron James. When defending Wemby, Towns has held the 7-foot-4 star to 20 points on 7-of-19 shooting and seven turnovers. Thus, if the voting were held today, Towns probably has the award…but plenty of basketball remains. Not only can the Spurs rally to win the series, but the Knicks still need two more wins, and that will involve several key moments. This is similar to when a marquee golfer, such as Scottie Scheffler, is a tournament’s betting favorite despite trailing by five shots after two rounds. The betting market reflects his projected performance over the final two rounds.Strengthening Brunson’s case is his command and execution down the stretch, while Towns has yet to score a single point in the fourth quarter. That is Brunson’s identity and figures to remain the case, given his position as point guard.I believe this year’s market is notably off. I think Brunson should be around a -150 favorite and thus has betting value at the current price. He is the face of this franchise, and MVP voters will view him as an incumbent, which means Towns will have to outperform him by an overwhelming margin in the final two games. While that can certainly happen, I just doubt the chances of it match the odds.Like it or not, narratives play a significant role. Brunson’s likability is part of that equation, and thus his willingness to take significantly less money in 2024 contributes to how the fan favorite is viewed. Towns is also well-liked, and the New Jersey native’s post-game openness while discussing his mother’s death in 2020 has only increased how many view him. In a vacuum, these variables should not play a role, but voters are human, and often this can subconsciously earn deference.I also think the fallout from Iguodala’s award still lingers. Many do not believe he should have won it, given James still posted insane numbers and Steph Curry had such a large impact in Golden State’s four wins. Even when Curry did not litter the box score, his presence consumed the defense’s attention and thus created clean looks for teammates. Humans prefer to avoid errors that can be revisited years later, which I believe allows Brunson to get the benefit of the doubt.Brunson is only shooting 19-of-56 in this series (33.9 percent), but I believe the oddsmakers are too fixated on that. His late-game heroics and overall impact on the game will carry far greater weight with voters than they seem to realize. Towns is certainly alive in this race, but Brunson has the betting value.Jun 8, 2026Connections: Sports EditionSpot the pattern. Connect the termsFind the hidden link between sports terms
