EThekwini ANC convener Thabani Nyawose commits to deliver 1.2 millions votes for the party to obtain a majority and retain the eThekwini municipality.
As analysts predict a clean sweep for the Umkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) in eThekwini in the upcoming local government elections, the ANC has launched a pushback campaign, vowing to mobilise all its resources to retain the only Metro in Kwazulu-Natal.
Buoyed by good attendance of the party faithful at a rally on Sunday, eThekwini regional task team convener Thabani Nyawose in front of the party’s Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, committed that the regional leadership have set a target of 1,2 million votes which will give the party an overwhelming majority to govern eThekwini municipality, without a coalition.
“We have sat down with our volunteer team and set a target. I wish to announce that we have agreed that the ANC must secure 1,2 million votes in the upcoming local government elections. We have also agreed to retain all our 74 wards we won in 2021 and increase the number of PR (Proportional Representation) seats,” said Nyawose.
While Mbalula agreed with the target, he called on the party to work with the municipality to address the water challenges in the city. He also called for ending of crime in eThekwini and praised provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi for the good job he is doing, saying to effectively deal with crime, 'rotten potatoes in the South Police Service must be rooted out as they are falling one by one at Madlanga Commission'.
