Mourners gathered at Lakemba Mosque in Sydney’s west to farewell slain Coconut Cartel leader Lorenzo Tovia Lemalu, as family members, friends and relatives from Samoa paid tribute to the 24-year-old following his funeral under heavy police security.
Lorenzo was laid to rest after his body was returned home from Vietnam, where he was gunned down last month in an ambush on a busy street beside a seafood restaurant.
His casket was taken to Lakemba under full police escort, with officers maintaining a close watch throughout the funeral. The motorcade, usually reserved for celebrities and VIPs, was accompanied amid public safety concerns as authorities monitored the service.
Dozens of people dressed in black attended the funeral under a heavy police presence. Officers were stationed on surrounding streets and patrolled the area during the ceremony. Many attendees kept their faces covered as they moved in and out of the mosque, and the atmosphere remained quiet and tense. Police helicopters also circled overhead, maintaining surveillance throughout the service.
A previous report by the Samoa Observer revealed that two Samoan nationals were arrested in Vietnam in connection with investigations surrounding the fatal shooting of a group of Australian nationals.
